For a small dog the usual feeder questions flip. Hopper size barely matters when a 12 lb dog eats under a cup a day, and the numbers that decide whether a feeder works are the smallest portion it can dispense, how finely it steps up from there, whether it can slow a meal down, and whether its mechanism accepts the small kibble most small-breed and puppy formulas use. This guide applies those four filters to feeders whose makers document them, and it leans on PetSafe’s own wording, “cats and small to medium-sized dogs”, which our large-dog feeder guide uses as a reason to exclude the same products.

Why Small Dogs Need a Different Checklist

A 60 lb dog eating 3 cups a day is forgiving of a feeder that rounds portions to the nearest 1/4 cup. A 9 lb dog eating 1/2 cup a day is not: a 1/8-cup error is a quarter of the whole day’s food, and half of each meal if that 1/2 cup is split into two 1/4-cup meals. The same arithmetic applies to kibble shape. Small-breed and puppy formulas are often pressed into pieces under 10 mm, and some feeder mechanisms are documented for a size range rather than “any dry food”. Finally, small dogs and puppies are frequently fed three or four times a day rather than two, so the meals-per-day limit and the ability to add a small “snack” slot matter more than they do for a large dog on two meals. None of this is about ruggedness, which is the large-dog problem; it is about resolution.

How to Choose: Four Numbers to Check

  • Smallest portion and step size. PetSafe documents “1/8 – 4 cup portions” for Simply Feed and Smart Feed. Whisker documents “1/8-cup increments” up to 1/2 cup per feeding. PETLIBRO documents a 20 ml portion (about 10 g, roughly 1/12 cup) that stacks 1 to 50 times per meal. The 5 Meal Pet Feeder has no step at all: you fill each 1-cup compartment with whatever amount you choose.
  • Meals per day. Simply Feed and Smart Feed schedule up to 12 meals a day; Granary WiFi up to 10 “meals or snacks”; Feeder-Robot 1 to 8 times a day; the 5 Meal Pet Feeder, by definition, up to five (the first tray is available at once and four are timed).
  • Slow feed. PetSafe’s Slow Feed option “dispenses meals larger than 1/8 cup in small increments over 15 minutes” on both the Simply Feed and the Smart Feed. For a small dog that gulps, this replaces a separate slow bowl. PetSafe also calls the 5 Meal Pet Feeder “great as a slow feed option for pets who eat too fast”, because it divides a meal into smaller portions over a short amount of time. Whisker and PETLIBRO do not document an equivalent.
  • Kibble size. PetSafe: “dry and semi-moist kibble up to a 3/4 in diameter”. Whisker: “5/8 inch or less”. PETLIBRO: “2–15 mm (0.08–0.6 in)”. The upper limits are rarely the problem for a small dog; the lower limit on PETLIBRO’s range is worth checking against very small puppy kibble, and semi-moist food is documented by PetSafe and Whisker, while PETLIBRO says the Granary works with dry food only.

Then the usual questions: power (batteries, adapter or both), cleaning, and whether an app is a feature or a dependency. Our timed dog feeder guide explains the scheduling modes in depth, and the smart dog feeder guide covers app control.

Feeders Makers List for Small to Medium Dogs

PetSafe names the dog size most directly, on every product page. Its Healthy Pet Simply Feed is “for cats and small to medium-sized dogs”, with the same wording on the Smart Feed 2nd Generation and the 5 Meal Pet Feeder. The portion range and slow feed are identical on the two hopper models; the difference is control. Simply Feed uses buttons on the unit and runs on 4 D batteries or an adapter sold separately. Smart Feed adds Wi-Fi, the My PetSafe app, a Feed Now button, low-food alerts and top-rack dishwasher-safe parts.

  • 24-cup hopper; conveyor dispenses dry or semi-moist kibble up to 3/4 inch
  • runs on 4 × D batteries or an optional wall adapter (sold separately)
02

PetSafe Smart Feed, 2nd Generation (PFD00-16828)

App Feeders With Small Portion Steps

Whisker does not name a dog size, and PETLIBRO’s FAQ says the Granary is “more suitable for small or medium sized pets, such as small dogs, cats, and rabbits”; both cards rest mainly on portion documentation. Whisker says Feeder-Robot “works for cats or dogs”, dispenses “up to 1/2 cup … in 1/8-cup increments, 1 to 8 times per day” and takes kibble of 5/8 inch or less. Its hopper (up to 32 cups) is far larger than a small dog needs, which is harmless; it simply means fewer refills. PETLIBRO’s Granary WiFi is the finest-grained of the group at about 20 ml per portion, and its 5 L hopper, 2–15 mm kibble recommendation and 3 D-cell backup batteries are all on the maker’s page. Neither documents a slow-feed mode.

04

Whisker Feeder-Robot

Best for: App scheduling with 1/8-cup steps; Whisker lists it for cats or dogs.

  • dispenses up to 1/2 cup per feeding in 1/8-cup steps, 1 to 8 times a day
  • holds up to 32 cups of dry food without the hopper insert (25 cups with it)
  • accepts dry or semi-moist kibble up to 5/8 inch
05

PETLIBRO Granary WiFi

Best for: Very small, finely stepped portions from an app, for kibble that fits its 2–15 mm range.

  • each portion is about 20 ml (10 g, roughly 1/12 cup); 1 to 50 portions per meal, up to 10 meals a day
  • 5 L hopper; PETLIBRO recommends kibble 2–15 mm (0.08–0.6 in) in diameter
  • DC 5V adapter with 3 × D backup batteries (not included); 2.4 and 5 GHz WiFi

Puppies: Growth Changes the Portion Every Few Weeks

A puppy’s ration climbs steadily for months, so the useful feature is not a big hopper but an easy way to nudge each meal up by one step without reprogramming the whole schedule. App feeders make that a two-tap change; button feeders like Simply Feed make it a short menu walk. Three or four meals a day is common for young puppies, which every feeder on this page supports. Two cautions: puppy kibble can be very small, so check PETLIBRO’s 2 mm lower limit and run a handful through any feeder before trusting it, and no feeder replaces watching a puppy eat often enough to catch a problem. Treats add up fast at small body weights too; our timed treat dispenser guide explains how scheduled snacks fit, and the food calculator gives a starting daily total to discuss with your veterinarian.

Two Small Dogs, One Feeder?

The same rule that applies to two large dogs applies here: a single bowl means the faster eater gets more. PETLIBRO’s Granary page offers a Dual Bowl style; it is not carded here because the listing is a different package. For a different approach, our RFID cat feeder guide covers microchip-controlled bowls that open only for a registered pet, which some small-dog households use. Check the maker’s pet-size wording for those before buying.

Quick Checklist Before You Buy

  • Weigh one of your dog’s meals and confirm the feeder’s smallest step divides into it
  • Check the maker’s pet-size wording; PetSafe states it on each page, PETLIBRO in its FAQ, and Whisker says only “cats or dogs”
  • Choose a PetSafe slow-feed option (the Slow Feed mode, or the 5 Meal’s split trays) if your dog gulps, or plan a separate slow bowl
  • Run a handful of your actual kibble through the mechanism, especially very small puppy kibble
  • Count the meals per day you need now and in six months
  • Decide whether you want buttons, an app, or a tray feeder with no mechanism at all

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the smallest portion an automatic dog feeder can dispense?

Among the documented models here, PETLIBRO’s Granary WiFi uses a portion of about 20 ml (roughly 1/12 cup), and PetSafe’s Simply Feed, Smart Feed and Whisker’s Feeder-Robot step in 1/8-cup increments. A tray feeder like PetSafe’s 5 Meal Pet Feeder takes any amount you place in each compartment.

Does PetSafe say its feeders are for small dogs?

Yes. PetSafe’s product pages for Healthy Pet Simply Feed, Smart Feed 2nd Generation and the 5 Meal Pet Feeder each describe them as for cats and small to medium-sized dogs.

Can an automatic feeder slow down a small dog that eats too fast?

PetSafe documents a Slow Feed option on Simply Feed and Smart Feed that spreads meals larger than 1/8 cup over 15 minutes. PetSafe also lists the 5 Meal Pet Feeder as a slow feed option, splitting a meal across its timed trays. Whisker and PETLIBRO do not document a slow-feed mode, so you would pair those with a slow bowl.

Is a small-dog feeder different from a cat feeder?

Mostly not. The models here are marketed to both, and PetSafe’s wording groups cats with small to medium dogs. Check the kibble size range and the pet-size wording rather than the picture on the box.
