About BowlScout

BowlScout is an independent, reader-first guide to automatic pet feeders, treat dispensers and related feeding tools for cats and dogs.

Why BowlScout exists

Two cats who never agree about dinner

BowlScout started at home with two British Shorthairs. Elsa, 6, a classic grey, eats only dry kibble. Melanie, 2, a golden chinchilla, eats only wet food. A single automatic feeder can’t serve both: wet food needs sealed, chilled trays that are emptied within hours, while kibble needs a hopper, portion control and a jam-resistant chute.

That is why every BowlScout guide starts from the household (wet or dry food, one pet or several, home or away) instead of from a product list. We research published specifications, manuals and recurring owner feedback, and we say plainly when we have not tested a product ourselves.

What each of them would need from a feeder

Wet food: sealed trays with an ice pack, short serving windows, easy-to-wash bowls. Dry food: a hopper sized to the refill interval, accurate portions and a chute that doesn’t jam on their kibble shape. Our wet-food feeder guide and timed feeder guide cover each case.

What we do

Start with the household need

We organize feeder options around portion control, wet food, multiple pets, selective access, remote monitoring, long refill intervals and outdoor use. Our guides explain the trade-offs instead of treating every product as suitable for every pet.

Our Food Calculator, Feeder Finder and Comparison tools are decision aids, not substitutes for veterinary advice or manufacturer instructions.

How guides are researched

Compare documented evidence

We review published specifications, product documentation, established pet-care references and recurring patterns in owner feedback. When we have not personally tested a product, we do not imply that we have.

How recommendations are formed

Fit matters more than feature count

We compare products against the use case in each guide and explain meaningful limitations. Prices and availability change, so readers should confirm current details with the retailer or manufacturer.

Our Editorial Policy explains how evidence and opinion are separated.

Affiliate funding

Commissions do not set conclusions

BowlScout may earn a commission when a reader follows an eligible link and makes a qualifying purchase, at no additional cost to the reader.

Commercial relationships do not determine inclusion, limitations or conclusions. See the Affiliate Disclosure.

Editorial independence

Uncertainty should stay visible

We aim to distinguish verified specifications, manufacturer claims, analysis and uncertainty. Marketing language is not treated as independent evidence.

Corrections and updates

Material errors should be fixed

Product details can change. We review pages periodically and correct material errors when they are identified. See our Corrections Policy.

General information, not veterinary advice

Feeding needs vary with body condition, age, activity, health and diet. For weight management, illness, pregnancy, growing animals or prescription diets, consult a qualified veterinarian.
